Medical Information
Families are responsible for providing accurate and complete health information through the program’s designated process. Relevant changes should be communicated to the appropriate authorized contact so that student care and support can be coordinated.
Important
Emergency Treatment
Designated adults may assist in obtaining emergency medical treatment when authorized under applicable program documents. Where the student’s signed Liability Release provides this authorization for a minor, those adults may include program staff, regional managers, area representatives and host families. The scope of authority follows the signed documents; the Host Family role alone does not confer general legal authority over the student.
Students and families should know the emergency contacts and procedures provided by their program. Urgent safety concerns should be communicated through the appropriate emergency channels without waiting for routine program follow-up.
Family Responsibility
Medical Costs
Families should understand their responsibilities for medical expenses and insurance coverage, including applicable coverage limits and out-of-pocket costs. Where the signed Liability Release assigns medical expenses to the family, the family remains responsible as provided in that document. Assistance in obtaining treatment does not imply that the program or Host Family pays for that care.
Health Information
Medical information may need to be shared with authorized program personnel when necessary for student care and support. Where a signed HIPAA authorization or other applicable authorization permits it, relevant information may be shared with program staff, Regional Managers, Area Representatives, host families and the student’s family to help coordinate medical care, within the scope of that authorization.
Use the designated private process for health information. Student names, medical records and individual health details do not belong on public program pages.
This guide should be read alongside the student’s signed agreement and applicable program terms. Requirements and authorizations can vary by program.
