Every home is different
Host families may differ in each of these areas. Placement is made under applicable program requirements; students should not expect to select a host family according to personal preferences.

Family Responsibility
Participating in home life
Students are expected to respect the host family’s reasonable household rules and participate appropriately as a member of the household. Communicating respectfully, understanding daily routines and asking questions early can support adjustment.
When a concern arises
- 01Student communicates
- 02Local / Area Representative assesses
- 03Program team follows up
- 04Further action if appropriate
For a host-family concern or a request to change homes, the Local / Area Representative is the first-line contact. They gather information, communicate with those involved and assess the situation. Significant concerns are reported to the Sponsor / Program Team; any change requires the appropriate approval.
Important
Personal preference ≠ Material cause
Differences in preferences or familiar routines do not by themselves establish a material reason for relocation. Concerns about safety or whether a placement meets program requirements should be communicated promptly for assessment. This distinction should not discourage students from raising a concern.
Where required under the applicable Program Agreement, students must accept a host-family placement that meets program requirements. Refusing a placement without material cause, or requesting relocation after arrival without such cause, may have serious consequences for continued participation under that agreement. A placement change is not guaranteed, and the International Representative does not decide host-family changes.
This guide should be read alongside the student’s signed agreement and applicable program terms. Requirements and authorizations can vary by program.
